In Detangled we see a young woman in the middle of detangling her hair as she listens to her records.Of course there is meant to be some Corinne Bailey Rae “Go Put Your Records On” vibes are at play here, but the decision to display motion in the woman’s arm with multiple outlines of it in different colors was inspired by photos of hummingbirds. Hummingbirds flap their wings 12-80 times per second, and in some photos it can look like they have 4-6 wings flapping around instead of just 2,, but the bird looks so calm, like it’s just so effortless!. Now I have never seen anyone detangle their hair at that pace, but when I have seen the women in my life complete their detangling rituals they look just as peaceful as they are in motion. Fun fact! This is the first painting where I let my youngest son and mini apprentice help with the background in my artwork. The paintings on the woman’s record player and wall are all his “abstract art”!
